External Roller Shutters and Facade Blinds – Comfort All Year Round

A modern home is not just energy-efficient windows and properly insulated walls. Equally important elements affecting residents’ comfort are external shading systems that help create optimal indoor conditions throughout the year.

External roller shutters and facade blinds effectively limit room heating, increase privacy, improve thermal and acoustic insulation, and emphasize the modern character of the building. How do you choose the solution best suited to your home? Or perhaps it’s worth combining both systems?

Why Are External Shading Systems So Important?

In modern construction, increasing attention is paid to home comfort and energy efficiency. Properly selected external shading plays a huge role in this – protecting interiors from excessive sunlight, helping maintain optimal indoor temperature, and increasing residents’ comfort.

As Paweł Lange, Product Manager at Sarna Windows emphasizes:

In today’s energy-efficient construction, there’s widespread discussion about the role of windows, their high insulation parameters, and proper wall insulation. This is important, but insufficient to genuinely impact a building’s thermal comfort and energy balance throughout the year. An often overlooked yet extremely important aspect involves issues related to interior overheating during summer. Increasingly frequent heat waves mean that proper solar radiation management becomes not only a matter of comfort, but also energy and economic efficiency.

It’s important to realize that internal blinds or curtains – while limiting glare – are not effective when it comes to genuinely limiting heat influx. Solar radiation penetrates through the glass, which can heat up to as much as 70°C. This heat then radiates into the interior. Therefore, if we truly want effective protection against overheating, we must move the barrier point outside. And this is precisely where external roller shutters and facade blinds appear as the most effective solutions.

Importantly – and I want to strongly emphasize this – it’s best to think about using sun protection already at the design stage. Why? Because proper preparation of lintels and window installation methods enables correct integration of the shading system with the building structure. For example, recessing the lintel relative to the wall face allows better insulation of the space between the box and the wall structure, which eliminates thermal bridges. Of course, the decision to install shading doesn’t always come early enough. In such cases, we can also propose adaptive solutions that can be fitted to existing conditions.

External Roller Shutters – A Proven Solution for Years

External roller shutters have been among the most popular window shading choices for years. They effectively protect against excessive sunlight, provide complete blackout, increase privacy, and improve thermal and acoustic insulation.

At Sarna Windows, we offer solutions tailored to both new investments and existing buildings. This means the right system can be selected regardless of the investment stage.

External roller shutters work particularly well in bedrooms, children’s rooms, or home offices, where complete blackout and comfort are crucial.

Facade Blinds – Modern Appearance and Light Control

Large glazing has become one of the most characteristic elements of contemporary architecture. To fully utilize its potential, it’s worth choosing facade blinds.

Their greatest advantage is the ability to smoothly adjust the slat angle, which allows controlling the amount of light entering the interior without having to completely cover the windows. This keeps rooms bright and comfortable while being effectively protected from excessive sunlight.

Facade blinds available in the Sarna Windows range fit perfectly into modern architecture and are an ideal solution for living rooms, dining rooms, and spaces with large glazing.

You Don’t Have to Choose Just One Solution

Although we often wonder whether external roller shutters or facade blinds are the better choice, in practice more and more investors are deciding to combine both systems.

Roller shutters work excellently in bedrooms and children’s rooms, where complete blackout and privacy matter. Meanwhile, facade blinds are an ideal solution for living rooms, dining rooms, and other daytime zones with large glazing, because they enable flexible management of the amount of light entering the interior.

As Paweł Lange, Product Manager at Sarna Windows emphasizes:

What’s more, combining both solutions – that is, using roller shutters in some rooms (e.g., bedrooms) and blinds in others (e.g., living rooms with large glazing) – is entirely possible. Such a product mix provides greater design freedom and allows better matching of shading functionality to users’ needs. Additionally, a rich color palette and modern control systems (remote control, mobile app) make managing the shading simple and intuitive, and everything can operate within one integrated system.

Comfort and Convenience Every Day

Modern external roller shutters and facade blinds can be equipped with electric drives and Smart Home systems. This makes controlling the shading extremely simple – using a remote control, switch, or mobile app. Intelligent solutions allow even better adaptation of shading operation to household members’ daily needs, increasing home comfort.
